Shrehith Karkera is Co-Founder at Finception. He has graduated from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. Under Finception, he along with his co-founders have started Finshots and Ditto Insurance, with Finshots being the flagship product, having over 350k readers for its newsletter.
Bytes and Takeaways-
Find your passion and pursue it. In simpler words, find that thing that makes you get out of bed in the morning, because you love to do it.
He says that he learned the hard way, how important it is to have a plan. Without a plan, you are lost. When you have a plan, you know why is the thing taking time and you're okay with it because it's calculated. And when you don't have one, you just have a lot of questions. Be a good planner.
Having an opportunistic mindset and being able to find opportunities are really important. Shrerith and his fellow IIM-A alumnus Pawan got inspired by the initial success of Zerodha, back in 2018. Starting another discount broking company was their initial thought. But, they dwelled deeper and figured out that there are thousands of people who want to invest in the stock markets, but lacked sufficient knowledge for the same. That's when they started "FinShots", a daily newsletter explaining all things Finance, in a beginner-friendly manner. This is synonymous with how, during the Gold Rush, people minted huge sums of money selling the mining tools, than people who gathered to discover gold.
Adhering to their mission of "Making Finance simple", they launched "Ditto", which simplifies insurance for a common Indian man. Focusing on a problem and finding out ways to solve it is a trait of a successful entrepreneur. Quoting Charles Bukowski -
"If you're going to try, go all the way."
Sharing his experience of running FinShots, a popular newsletter, he talks about how important and difficult it is to make the readers stay, to retain them, through every piece of article. He continues talking about how there is less scope in monetizing a newsletter and making a business out of it. The key to a successful business idea is that you should first understand the product to the depth, and then you should understand its users/customers. Customer Behaviour is a skill that an aspiring entrepreneur should learn and implement.
